Types of CNS Tumors
Gliomas
Including glioblastoma and lower-grade astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas; classified by IDH mutation and other markers.
Meningiomas
Usually benign tumors of the brain's covering; may be observed or removed.
Brain Metastases
Spread from lung, breast, melanoma and other cancers — the most common brain tumors in adults.
Pediatric Tumors
Medulloblastoma, ependymoma and pediatric gliomas require specialized centers.
Symptoms
- New or worsening headaches, especially in the morning
- Seizures
- Weakness, numbness or vision changes
- Personality, memory or speech changes
Treatment
Care combines maximal safe surgery, radiation (including stereotactic radiosurgery), chemotherapy such as temozolomide, targeted therapy (e.g., vorasidenib for IDH-mutant glioma) and tumor treating fields, coordinated by a neuro-oncology team.
