What is Cancer?

Cancer refers to a large group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled division of abnormal cells that have the potential to invade adjacent tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant organs. Unlike benign tumors which do not invade surrounding tissues or spread, malignant tumors are invasive and require prompt clinical intervention.

Genetics and Biological Mechanisms

At a molecular level, cancer develops when mutations occur in genes regulating cell division, growth signaling, and programmed cell death (apoptosis). These genetic alterations can arise from:

  • Sarcomas: Tumors arising from connective tissues, including bone, cartilage, muscle, and blood vessels.
  • Leukemias: Cancers of the blood-forming tissues and bone marrow causing abnormal blood cell proliferation.
  • Lymphomas & Myelomas: Cancers originating in the lymphatic system and plasma immune cells.
  • Central Nervous System Cancers: Primary tumors originating in the brain or spinal cord tissue.

Recognizing Common Clinical Signs

While many symptoms can also indicate benign health conditions, persistent unexplained changes should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional:

  • Unexplained weight loss and persistent fatigue
  • New, enlarging, or changing lumps in breast, lymph nodes, or soft tissue
  • Persistent cough, hemoptysis (coughing blood), or prolonged hoarseness
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Unusual bleeding, bruising, or non-healing skin sores

Diagnostic and Detection Tools

  • Radiation Oncology: High-energy ionizing radiation targeting tumor tissue while sparing adjacent organs.
  • Systemic Chemotherapy: Cytotoxic pharmacological agents targeting rapidly dividing malignant cells.
  • Immunotherapy: Immune checkpoint inhibitors boosting the patient's own immune system to destroy tumor cells.
